This week I wanted to share with you how easy it is to screen print your own designs.
This step by step presentation guides you through the entire process from stencil to finished design.
Preparation
Before you begin printing, you will need to prepare your work surface. I usually put down an old towel and cover it with a piece of lining paper, which I tape in place. This protects the work surface from the ink and also helps to produce better prints. It provides a cushioned surface than you would not get from printing directly on to the table top.
Fabric
I like to use natural and eco-friendly products where possible. The fabric I tend to use is a linen/cotton blend, which adds a little bit of texture to the finished piece.
Screen Printing Ink
Screens need to be cleaned with water and this means the waste ends up down the drain which isn’t necessarily the best thing for the planet. Using eco-friendly products helps, even if it’s only in a small way.
Setting the Fabric
This simply means making the ink wash proof. If possible, I recommend using an old iron to heat set the ink. You don’t want to accidentally mark your best clothes with ink after a screen-printing session.

Once you are comfortable with the whole screen printing process, you will be able to make so many wonderful things. You will have so much fun. You will be able to create stunning accessories such as cushions, bunting, zipped pouches, soft toys and clothes to name but a few.
